The St James Village BIZ is excited to unveil its latest streetscape project, the gateway monument at the corner of Portage Ave and St James Street. A long-standing welcoming monument to the St James Village community was damaged over 6 year ago leaving only the steel pillars in its place. Through local collaboration and with support from the City of Winnipeg’s Community Investment Grant fund the St James Village BIZ reimagined the monument inspired by the vintage 70’s sign that once stood near the same location.
“The St James Village Biz (BIZ) is one of 16 city zones in Winnipeg. It’s purpose and focus is to keep the street clean and attractive for the businesses and buildings located on Portage Ave. from St. James St. to Sackville St. This “BIZ” allows for use of city support to accomplish an attractive city streetscape by cooperating with graffiti removal, litter removal, planting of flowers and trees. Owning and operating on a main street is a valuable choice for location and investment. The BIZ organizes our businesses to keep improving our streetscape and enhance the city services we receive. Using cooperative marketing we help to sustain and increase each business’ exposure.”, Genevieve Grant, Chair of St. James Village Biz.
“Every day thousands of Winnipeggers and visitors travel into the heart of St. James. Now, a beautiful sign sponsored by the St. James Biz, will now welcome everyone to our great community. We hope people will stop, shop and enjoy all that St. James has to offer.” – Councillor Scott Gillingham
The project was funded by the St James Village BIZ capital savings fund and Councillor Scott Gillingham through the local Community Incentive Grant ($21,000).
